In general, colocation is moving or placing things together, sometimes implying a proper order. In technology, colocation is the renting of physical space in our datacentre.
Data centre colocation allows a small or mid-sized business to save money by storing and running parts of its IT infrastructure off-site instead of building and maintaining a large dedicated data centre in-house. For instance, a start-up business might colocate its servers. In such a scenario, the servers are owned by the business but are colocated to save money in overhead costs incurred by things like cooling, physical security or insurance. ValueVPS can also provide technical support for additional fees. (See VPS and Server Management Services.)
Colocation can be contrasted with cloud computing, a leasing model that allows a business to rent IT infrastructure on demand over the Internet. In a cloud computing scenario, everything is rented; the only thing the business owns is its data.
Colocation can also be spelled "colocation" or "co-location."

Colocation or Dedicated Server Rental?
This is a choice that only you can make. Colocation allows you to have a server of your own specification housed in our racks. This works out much cheaper than renting a dedicated server but does come with some pitfalls, a good example being hardware failure. Most datacentres will not keep spares for you so you must supply spares and also pay for engineer time.
ValueVPS will hold spares for you and charges a very competitive £25.00 per hour for remote hands and eyes (Engineer time).
If you would prefer to rent one of our dedicated servers, looking after the hardware is our responsibility. Although renting a server will cost more than colocating your own server, the cost of replacement parts and engineer time is met by ValueVPS.
Colocation Delivery
Once you have signed up for our colocation service, we will contact you by email giving you our datacentre address to ship your server to. You will need to let us know when to expect your server - if you are using a courier, please email us the delivery details.
Please do not supply disks, cables or manuals with your server. if you have rails for your server, please supply them.
